Making an Official Information Act request

Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology is subject to the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) and you can make a request to us for information that we hold.

The following is designed to assist you when making a request and to provide you with some basic expectations.

How to make a request

Requests should include your name, your postal address or preferred email address, and specific details of the information you seek.

How will we deal with your request?

We will acknowledge your request, usually within 24 hours, and respond to your request no later than 20 working days after we receive it.  

We may contact you to refine your request if the scope is very broad or if we feel the request is not clear.

Sometimes for large requests or those requiring consultation, we will seek an extension. If so, we will let you know about this and give you a new due date by which we plan to respond.  

What will our response look like?

We will endeavour to respond to your request in your preferred manner. We will respond by restating your request and answering every question asked. Any supporting documentation supplied will usually be provided as an attachment in PDF format.

If we are not able to supply all the information requested or satisfy your request in full, we will inform you of this in our response. Our response will explain the reason why and refer you to the specific section of the Act.

What if you are not happy with our response?

If you have not received a response by the due date or are not satisfied with your response, you have the right to make a complaint to the Ombudsman. Information about how to do this is available at or call 0800 802 602.
