Te Oranga — individuals and whānau engage in society at all levels

Te Oranga means not only to survive, but to have access to the things that enable us to thrive – to have wellbeing and good health, to ensure we can make a living, to lead a meaningful life.

“Community can be you and one other person. Create a community where you feel safe, seen, and heard. Once you have a loving support network, you can allow yourself to be vulnerable and authentic.”

Ways to connect to this whetū

  • Celebrate success within your whānau – however big or small! Every positive step is worth celebrating.
  • Reach for support if you need extra help with kai, study supplies, living costs or something else. Support services are there to help you to be the best you can for you and your whānau.
  • Have meaningful conversations with your whānau, your tamariki, mokopuna or your siblings. What do you aspire to do or be? What legacy do you want to create?
  • Support a peer, community, group or cause close to your heart. We often feel better when we are being of service to others. This might look like advocating for someone in need, joining your tamaiti’s Kohanga Reo whānau board, or volunteering to take a sports team. Connection often comes from participating in a cause bigger than oneself.

“Reach out to others. If you're disabled, accessing the right support makes a big difference in setting yourself up for your future so you don't feel left behind.”
